Folks, this song is a homage to the fans. The "ocean" is the sea of people at the concerts.

"Singing to an ocean, I can hear the ocean's roar

Not many bands acknowledge their fans in lyrics.

I love how Robert Plant mentions his family in his lyrics. Like when he says "she is only three years old" he mentions how he loves his daughter. And also, in Bron-Y-Aur-Stomp he says "ain't no companion like a blue eyed merl" which is a type of welsh corgi. a dog. He's a great lyricist.

The Ocean is a fun song with an off-time beat that will outlast eternity. It's in the key of A and has a wonderful acapela breakdown with multiple voices and harmonies. The lyrics aren't too serious but Plant does mention that he loves his children. Page overdubs a section so many times he puts up a wall of sound for us all to enjoy. The ending is a great showcase of the bands dynamincs and ultimate capability to bring down the house. The fact of the matter is: This song Rocks!
